The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 125
Sweat beaded on Yvonne’s forehead, but her gaze was determined. She walked much more steadily than before.
“Good, just five more steps.”
Yvonne took a deep breath. Just as she was about to step forward, a delicate voice came
from the door.
“Yvonne, I came to see you!”
Yvonne’s steps faltered, and her body swayed. Leilani immediately steadied her and looked toward the door.
Tamara was holding onto Milford’s arm, a gentle smile on her face. However, her eyes flashed with surprise the moment she saw Leilani.
Why was Leilani here? Didn’t she stop treating Yvonne after she started recovering?
Tamara couldn’t reveal that she knew Leilani had been treating Yvonne. Feigning surprise, Tamara widened her eyes. “Leilani, what are you doing here?”
Leilani ignored her.
Milford frowned slightly, clearly not expecting to see Leilani there either.
Tamara let go of his arm and walked quickly to Yvonne, affectionately trying to take her hand. “Yvonne, how is your recovery going? I’ve been wanting to come see you, but I was afraid of disturbing your rest…”
Yvonne subconsciously took half a step back, avoiding her touch. Her tone was cold. “I’m
fine.”
Tamara’s hand froze in mid-air. The smile on her face didn’t waver, but her eyes darkened. She withdrew her hand and targeted Leilani, her tone laced with fake concern. “Leilani, you haven’t said why you’re here. Mrs. Sherwood has never liked you being here. Won’t… won’t she be angry if she sees you?”
Her words were spoken gently but carried hidden thorns, hinting that Leilani wasn’t welcome by the Sherwood family and was thick-skinned for hanging around.
Leilani didn’t even bother to look up, her tone flat. “I’m here to keep Yvonne company.”
She didn’t want to explain a single word more. Mostly, she was tired of Tamara’s games and couldn’t be bothered to engage.
“Is that so? I thought maybe you felt guilty toward Yvonne and were trying to be attentive…” Tamara covered her mouth in mock dismay after speaking, as if she had accidentally let slip something she shouldn’t have.

Yvonne was annoyed watching Tamara’s act. Leilani was her savior; visiting her was normal. Why was Tamara stirring the pot with this passive-aggressive nonsense?
Yvonne’s face darkened. “Tamara! You said that on purpose!”
Tamara blinked innocently. “What’s wrong, Yvonne? Did I say something wrong?”
Yvonne had a good relationship with Leilani, so Tamara’s comment was definitely inappropriate. Milford frowned and stepped forward to smooth things over for Tamara. “Yvonne, Tamara just spoke without thinking. Don’t be so harsh.”
Tamara had said those words deliberately. Seeing Yvonne and Milford about to clash, she pouted aggrievedly. “Milford, don’t get mad at Yvonne. It’s my fault. I was just worried about her. I didn’t mean to say the wrong thing.”
Tamara figured that as Milford’s official fiancée and Yvonne’s future sister-in-law, Yvonne would have to give her some respect. But she didn’t expect Yvonne to give her none at all.
Yvonne sneered. “Save your fake kindness.”
The atmosphere stagnated instantly. Tamara froze, stung by Yvonne’s blunt words, but quickly squeezed out a wronged expression, her eyes reddening. “Yvonne, how can you say that about me? I truly care about you…”
