The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 126
Yvonne laughed coldly, standing straight with her cane, her eyes sharp. “Care about me? Then why were you being sarcastic and targeting Leilani just now? Don’t you know Leilani is the one who saved my life? I get angry when you treat her like that! And…”
Yvonne’s rejection of Tamara was obvious. “You say you’re worried about me, but your eyes keep drifting to my brother. Who knows if you’re just using me as an excuse to score points with him?”
Having her intentions exposed, Tamara’s expression shifted instantly, her voice turning shrill. “Yvonne! How can you misunderstand me like that?”
She turned to Milford, looking like she was about to cry. “Milford, I didn’t. I really just wanted to get along with Yvonne.”
Milford furrowed his brows, reaching out to hold Tamara’s shoulder. He looked at Yvonne with disapproval, feeling she had crossed a line.
“Yvonne, Tamara put a lot of effort into taking care of you while you were in a coma. You can’t talk like that. Apologize to Tamara!”
Yvonne said nothing. Apologize to Tamara? In her dreams!
She didn’t know what happened while she was in a coma, but her gut told her Tamara was faking it.
Besides, when she was lying in that hospital bed, Tamara wasn’t engaged to Milford yet. At most, she was just a visitor. Gloria absolutely wouldn’t have let her do any actual work.
“I was in a coma. If anyone took care of me, it was Mom or the nurses. Did she change my bedpans? Just because she visited a few times, I have to be grateful to her?”
Yvonne guessed correctly. During her coma, Tamara only sat by the side. The dirty work was mostly done by Gloria and the nurses. After all, no matter how much Tamara liked Milford, she couldn’t bring herself to clean up someone else’s mess.
Tamara’s face turned pale at Yvonne’s words. She gripped Milford’s sleeve tightly, looking up at him pitifully, hoping he would stand up for her. “Milford…”
Between his sister who had just recovered from a serious illness and his future wife, Milford was in a difficult position.
Since Yvonne shouldn’t get too agitated, he could only try to smooth things over for Tamara again. He patted Tamara’s hand comfortingly and spoke helplessly to her, “Yvonne just recovered, so her emotions might be unstable. Don’t take it to heart. I know you mean well.”
Milford intended to ease the tension. However, seeing he still defending Tamara despite her obvious distaste, Yvonne was furious. Her chest heaved, and she turned to leave.

But she moved too fast; her cane slipped, and her body pitched forward.
“Careful!” Seeing this, Tamara immediately rushed forward with “concern,” reaching out to support her.
But Yvonne reacted as if she had been touched by something filthy and flung her hand away violently. “Don’t touch me!”
“Ah!” Tamara screamed, stumbling back a few steps from the shove and falling heavily to the ground.
Milford’s expression changed drastically. He rushed to help Tamara up, then turned to scold Yvonne. “Yvonne! What are you doing? Apologize to Tamara immediately!”
Leilani supported Yvonne to help her stand steady.
Seeing Tamara’s act, Yvonne was so angry her eyes turned red. She hadn’t used much force at all. How could a simple shove send her to the ground? Tamara was clearly faking it!
