The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 148
“Well, to each their own,” he shook his head, mumbling, “Just a pity to miss such a good
opportunity…”
Leilani didn’t reply. She silently took out her phone. The screen still showed no new
messages.
As the scenery blurred past the window, Leilani watched the brightening sky in the distance, her thoughts drifting to Callahan. Why was he in such a hurry to find her?
Marlon turned the steering wheel, entering the main road. “Should I take you home to rest?”
“Mmh.” Leilani closed her eyes, but the image of the pendant Paulina left for her flashed in her mind.
They had been in a rush to get to Brass City, so they had flown. Since there was no rush to return, Marlon drove back to Alloy City. The distance wasn’t far, but by the time they arrived, it was already ten in the morning, approaching noon.
Leilani sat in Marlon’s car, tapping her fingers lightly against the window edge. Seeing the route heading toward Celestial Heights, she spoke up to stop Marlon. “Don’t take me straight to Celestial Heights yet.”
Marlon glanced at her in the rearview mirror, surprised. “You’re not going home?”
“Go to the City General Hospital first. I need to look up some information there.”
It was still early, over an hour before the hospital staff got off work. She hadn’t notified Yvonne or Hale about her return yet, so there was nothing to do at home. Since her break in the Capital was short, she had to make the most of her time for research.
Marlon nodded and turned the wheel toward the City General Hospital.
The car stopped at the entrance. Leilani got out, but before she took two steps, a familiar, arrogant voice called out from behind.
“Leilani? Why are you at our hospital again?”
She paused and turned slowly. Zeus Sloan stood on the hospital steps, his white lab coat buttoned meticulously to the collar. His gaze behind his gold-rimmed glasses was sharp and disdainful as he looked down at her.
His eyes swept over her, then to the low-key luxury sedan behind her, finally settling on Marlon in the driver’s seat. His look suddenly turned surprised.
Marlon was the heir to the Watson Group. Zeus remembered that his mother, Tilda, had just recovered and been discharged from their hospital a month ago. Why was he back?
Marlon noticed the stare and knew this was Leilani’s brother. After investigating Leilani’s

past, he knew a fair amount. He didn’t have a good impression of her family.
Just as Zeus was wondering about the relationship between him and Leilani, Leilani told Marlon to leave first and said she would notify him when she needed to go to Brass City. Clearly, she wanted him to go; she could handle this.
Marlon reasoned that with Leilani’s capabilities, dealing with Zeus was trivial. He nodded. slightly at her and drove away, not sparing Zeus a glance.
Being treated like air naturally didn’t feel good. Once Marlon left, Zeus’s face darkened as he turned to Leilani.
“Wasn’t that Marlon from the Watson Group? How did you get mixed up with him?” he asked coldly.
Leilani raised an eyebrow, noncommittal. Zeuss brain seemed capable of thinking about nothing but illicit affairs.
