The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 186
Floyd’s rejection was explicit. Zeus looked as if he had been struck by lightning, his face instantly draining of color.
“Mr. Dillon, I…”
He opened his mouth to argue, but Floyd unceremoniously pressed the intercom on his desk.
“Kent, come in. Show him out.”
As soon as the words left Floyd’s mouth, the door was pushed open. The intermediary walked in cautiously, an awkward smile plastered on his face.
“Dr. Sloan, maybe… we should head out first?”
The intermediary’s initial good impression of Zeus had evaporated. Others, even when rejected, left with humility and grace. Zeus was the first to enrage Floyd to this extent during a simple interview, making the situation incredibly ugly. It seemed he wasn’t as outstanding or capable as Zane had claimed.
Judging by Floyd’s reaction, the intermediary feared he might get a dressing-down later for bringing him in. He was already regretting taking on this thankless task for Zane.
Zeus stood frozen, his fingers clutching the hem of his suit jacket so tightly his knuckles turned white. He made no move to leave. He stared intensely at Leilani, his eyes filled with a mix of anger, resentment, and a trace of… disbelief.
He couldn’t believe it. He couldn’t believe he had lost to Leilani!
“Leilani, don’t get too smug!” He gritted his teeth, his voice lowered to a menacing whisper, every word laced with poison. “Do you think clinging to Mr. Dillon makes you secure? Someone like you, a high school grad with a prison record, will eventually show her true colors. When you fall to rock bottom, don’t come crawling to me begging for help!”
e was clear-Zeus wasn’t passing this interview. So, he abandoned all pretense and
ing Leilani’s vulnerabilities, bringing up the tired old topics of her education and criminal couldn’t have this, he wanted to make sure Leilani suffered too.
ooked up calmly, her gaze indifferent, as if watching a child throw a tantrum.
eus, you only ever focus on other people’s flaws, but never admit your own. Your own ability is lacking, yet you push the blame onto others. If I wanted to sabotage you, given my relationship with Mr. Dillon, I could have prevented you from even entering this room today.”
“Furthermore, the questions I asked were not out of bounds. Mr. Dillon knows that.”
“Zeus. Just admit it. You are the incompetent one. You simply can’t compare to me.”
So what if he had a fancy degree? Today, Zeus had lost.
Exposed mercilessly by Leilani, Zeus looked like his eyes were about to pop out of their sockets, glaring at her with bloodshot rage. He looked terrifying, as if he might physically attack her at any moment.

“Mr. Sloan.” Floyd took a step forward, blocking Leilani, and stared cold daggers at Zeus. “I can testify that none of the questions Leilani asked were unreasonable. On the contrary, look at yourself… What are you trying to do? Are you so humiliated that you want to resort to violence?”
Seeing the situation about to escalate further, the intermediary quickly stepped forward, grabbing Zeus’s arm.
