The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 187

Afraid Zeus still didn’t get it, the intermediary kept a smile on his face while warning him through gritted teeth.

“Think carefully. You know exactly who Mr. Dillon is. If you dare to cause a scene here, forget about joining his team-you won’t even keep your job as an attending physician at the hospital!”

That struck Zeus’s fatal weak point. The interview was already a bust; he couldn’t afford to lose his job too. He had no choice but to swallow his pride today.

Having thought it through, Zeus violently shook off the intermediary’s hand, turned around in a huff, and strode out.

At the door, Zeus looked back one last time.

Leilani stood by the window, the sunlight streaming through the glass and bathing her in a glow that made her look serene yet dazzling. From beginning to end, she maintained that calm composure, never sparing him another glance.

The last thing Zeus heard was Floyd remarking to Leilani, “Your family’s genetics are interesting. One is in the sky, the other in the mud.”

Leilani’s reply gave Zeus heart palpitations.

“Genetics are funny. Sometimes you get a mutation.”

The door clicked shut gently, and Leilani vanished from his sight.

After Zeus left, the intermediary apologized profusely to Leilani and Floyd before chasing after him. This matter wouldn’t be truly over until he got Zeus out of the villa complex. If Zeus lingered and wandered into restricted areas, they would all be finished.

Outside the villa, the sunlight was blinding.

Zeus stood on the steps, his chest heaving violently, black spots dancing before his eyes.

After dragging him out, the intermediary offered no comfort. He looked Zeus up and down with a sneer, mocked him, and then left without a backward glance.

Zeus was left alone at the entrance of the complex. In front of him stood the stern, imposing security guards. Their gazes swept over him occasionally, making him feel like he had been kicked out-like a humiliated clown.

Zeus had lost. He had lost completely. His pride, his degree, his seniority, his status-all worthless in front of Leilani!

But he didn’t understand… Leilani went to prison right after high school. Where did she learn all that professional medical knowledge?

Zeus realized it from her performance in front of Floyd. Her questions were organized and precise. If she didn’t truly understand the material, she couldn’t have been that natural and confident. So, Leilani wasn’t climbing the ladder using her looks or body, as he had imagined. She actually had the skills.

Back in the office.

With Zeus gone, quiet finally returned to Floyd’s office. He picked up his cup and took a slow sip, though his eyes kept drifting toward Leilani, hesitating to speak.

Leilani sensed his gaze and looked up. “Mr. Dillon, is there something you want to say?”

Floyd cleared his throat, put down the cup, and finally asked. “Leilani… was that really your biological brother?”

Not some distant relative? Given their attitude, they didn’t look like family at all.

Leilani nodded, her tone calm. “Yes, biological.”

Floyd’s frown deepened. “Then why is your relationship… so terrible?”
