The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 197

“She and I are over. I was just surprised earlier because I was afraid you’d be upset. After all, your relationship with her has never been good, and Leilani has such a bad temper. I promise you, from now on, I’ll listen to you. Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it. Stop overthinking it, okay?”

“Really?” Tamara looked at him with red-rimmed eyes.

“Really.” Milford nodded, his tone firming up. “I won’t call off the wedding, and we’ll do it right. We’ll definitely have the wedding of the century for you, alright?”

Tamara finally smiled through her tears and threw herself into his arms. “Milford, you’re the best.”

Milford gently patted her back, but his heart felt inexplicably empty.

What was done is done. What was the point of agonizing over the past?

Milford closed his eyes, suppressing the strange emotion in his heart, and coaxed her softly, “Don’t be mad anymore, okay?”

Tamara nodded obediently in his arms, but a triumphant smirk curled at the corner of her mouth.

After a while, Tamara lifted her head from his embrace and spoke cautiously. “If you really don’t want Leilani to come, then I… I’ll go tell her again…”

“No need.”

Milford rubbed his temples, feeling exhausted, but he still had to comfort Tamara.

He sighed and said, “Since she’s already invited, it wouldn’t be right to specifically tell someone not to come. Let’s just leave it at that.”

Tamara smiled again, leaning against his shoulder, and spoke softly, “Milford, don’t worry. Our wedding will be perfect.”

Milford hummed in agreement, but his gaze went slightly out of focus. Even though he kept telling himself and saying aloud not to care about Leilani anymore, he couldn’t help but picture her indifferent eyes in his mind.

Milford zoned out. It felt like an invisible hand was clenching his heart.

Would Leilani really come to his and Tamara’s wedding? If she came, how would he face her?

Tamara noticed his distraction, and a gloom flashed in her eyes. But she had already achieved her goal for the day; bringing it up again would only diminish the effect.

So she quickly put on a bright smile and acted coquettishly.

“Milford, I’ve already picked out the wedding venue and the dresses. Can you come with me to check them out after you get off work today? You can’t miss the first time I wear a wedding dress.”

Milford snapped back to reality, smiling gently and nodding. “Okay.”

Milford still had work to finish at the company, so Tamara went home first to wait for him.

The moment Tamara walked out of the Sherwood Group’s main entrance, the gentle smile on her face vanished instantly. She gripped the strap of her bag tightly, her nails digging into her palm, her eyes churning with dark rage.

She saw Milford’s reaction clearly. When Leilani was mentioned, the fleeting panic in his eyes couldn’t deceive anyone! He really was still hung up on that bitch!

Tamara sneered, took her phone out of her bag, and dialed a number.

The call connected quickly, and a rough male voice came from the other end. “Ms. Sloan?”

“You failed to hit Leilani with the car last time.” Tamara’s voice was ice-cold, carrying suppressed anger. “This time, I want her to disappear completely.”

It turned out that the car accident on the day Leilani went to meet Callahan for a blind date had been arranged by Tamara.

Unfortunately, Leilani’s reaction had been too fast. Not only did they fail to kill her, but a passerby had called the police.
