The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 26
She still looked like the same naive, beautiful girl as always. He remembered when Yvonne fell and was in a coma after being resuscitated, Tamara had sent people to take care of her and sometimes even attended to Yvonne personally.
Milford fell silent for a moment, deciding not to tell Tamara what Leilani had just said. Tamara and Leilani had always had a bad relationship. Tamara had already put so much effort into caring for and accompanying Yvonne; he didn’t want to make her overthink things. Besides, if Yvonne was truly cured, Tamara would probably be even happier.
Clearing his thoughts, Milford raised his hand to ruffle her hair, his tone gentle. “Nothing. I just warned her not to get near Yvonne again.”
Tamara blinked. “Really? Leilani didn’t… say anything about me?”
“What would she dare say?” Milford sneered, a trace of disgust flashing in his eyes. “What right does the culprit who hurt Yvonne have to accuse anyone else?”
However, recalling Leilani’s resolve just now, a complex feeling inevitably rose in Milford’s chest.
Hearing this, the tension in Tamara’s shoulders relaxed slightly, and the corners of her lips hooked up in an imperceptible arc.
“Milford, don’t be angry…” She leaned lightly on his arm, her voice sweet enough to drip honey. “Maybe Leilani was just confused at the time. Shall we forgive her?”
Milford worried that continuing this topic would reveal something, so he shifted the conversation. He smiled gently at Tamara and said, “Let’s go. Didn’t you say someone was looking for me?”
Tamara smiled sweetly. “Yeah!”
Seeing that Milford’s attitude toward Leilani was as hateful as ever, Tamara instantly relaxed.
The banquet came to an end, and guests began to leave in pairs.
Tilda personally walked Leilani to the door, holding her hand reluctantly. “My dear, come visit often! I’ll have the kitchen prepare something hearty and nutritious for you. Look how thin you are!”
Leilani felt a warmth in her heart and nodded. “Okay. Take care of your health.”
Marlon also walked over and handed her an exquisite wooden box. “Ms. Cheney, these are some rare medicinal ingredients. Consider it a small token of appreciation from us.”
The Watson family had already helped her enough today. So Leilani refused to accept it.
But Tilda immediately became unhappy, and they went back and forth on the spot. In the end, unable to decline, Leilani took the wooden box. “Thank you.”
Upon leaving the Watson estate, Leilani was greeted with a cool evening breeze. As she lingered by the curb waiting for a ride, she detected footsteps from behind. She turned to see Milford standing not far away, looking at her with a complicated expression.

Tamara had gone back first. He couldn’t let go of what Leilani had said earlier. As long as there was a glimmer of hope for his sister to be cured, he wasn’t willing to give up. Moreover, Leilani’s willingness to pledge her life had genuinely moved him.
“Leilani,” he said in a deep voice. “Was what you said… true?”
Leilani nodded faintly. “I never lie.”
Milford was silent for a moment before asking quietly, “Back then… who really pushed Yvonne?”
For the first time, Milford questioned the truth of the past. After all, if Leilani was truly the culprit, why would she want Yvonne to recover so badly?
Leilani looked at him, knowing he was beginning to doubt the official story.
“Milford, I’ve said it many times. The person who pushed Yvonne down the stairs wasn’t me.”
