The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 274
Leilani looked up and met Milford’s gaze.
The man was in a sharp suit, his face handsome, but there was a hint of fatigue between his brows. His gaze lingered on Leilani for a moment before he nodded slightly. “Hi, Leilani.”
Leilani’s expression was calm as she nodded back. “Hi, Mr. Sherwood.”
Milford pressed his lips together, seemingly wanting to say something, but swallowed it back.
Sensing the atmosphere was a bit awkward, Yvonne quickly tried to smooth things over. “Milford, Leilani just promised to hang out with me often after I get out!”
Milford gave a simple acknowledgment, his gaze still resting on Leilani. “Thank you for taking care of Yvonne during this time.”
Leilani smiled faintly. “No need to thank me. I’m a doctor, she’s a patient. That’s all.”
Her tone was distant and polite, as if there had never been any history between them.
Milford’s eyes darkened slightly. After a moment of silence, not knowing what possessed him, he suddenly asked Leilani, “My wedding with Tamara… will you come?”
There was a hidden emotion in Milford’s eyes-perhaps anticipation, perhaps anxiety.
Yvonne was also stunned, instinctively looking at Leilani.
Leilani’s expression didn’t change. In fact, the corners of her lips lifted into a faint smile. “I will.”
Milford seemed surprised that she agreed so readily and froze for a second. “… Really?”
“Of course.” Compared to the siblings’ tense demeanor, Leilani sounded very relaxed. “After all, I am very curious.”
