The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 78
No matter how composed and independent Leilani was, she was still a young woman alone in a strange country. Callahan wasn’t so lacking in chivalry that he wouldn’t see his dinner guest home.
Leilani, however, shook her head. “No need. I have some things to do.”
“Work? This late?”
“No, just shopping. I rarely come abroad; I should visit the malls. Don’t worry about me, Mr. Langley.”
Their relationship wasn’t close enough for shopping together. Leilani’s words were a polite rejection of his escort.
Callahan didn’t press her. “Alright then. Stay safe.”
Leilani nodded and turned to leave, her figure quickly blending into the night. She walked briskly, only slowing down once she was sure Callahan wasn’t following. She couldn’t let him know where she was staying, or her cover as ‘Dr. L’ might be blown.
Callahan had property in Zamora, so unlike Leilani, he wasn’t staying in a hotel. He returned to his own estate. Standing by the window of his study, smoke swirling from his cigarette, his eyes were dark.
Leilani’s presence was too coincidental. The first time he met her, she was being bullied by those two wastrel brothers of the Sloan family. She wore cheap clothes and looked cold, but showed no fear. He had helped her on a whim, thinking she was just an unfavored adopted daughter. But then…
Leilani not only bought a property in the high-end Celestial Heights within a week of getting out of prison, but now she had appeared abroad. Furthermore, the outfit she wore tonight wasn’t cheap-it was a designer piece that couldn’t be bought without spending millions at luxury stores.
What kind of work was she doing to earn so much money so quickly after being released?
This woman was constantly shattering his impression of her. He crushed his cigarette and called his assistant. “Check all flight records from home to Zamora in the last month under the name Leilani.”
He didn’t believe in such coincidences; he needed to know if this was orchestrated. If it was, her scheming and methods were truly formidable.
“Yes, Mr. Langley. But if she flew private or transferred, it might take time.”
“Just get it done.” Callahan hung up, his expression grim. He hoped Leilani wouldn’t disappoint him.

Meanwhile, back home, things were less pleasant for Tamara and Milford. In a high-end restaurant, Tamara stirred her lemon water, watching Milford pick at his dinner.

Milford snapped out of it, gave a faint “Hmm,” and mechanically cut a small piece, putting it in his mouth. His eyes remained unfocused.
