The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 79
Tamara bit her lip, a wave of displeasure rising in her chest. This wasn’t the first time. Milford had been like this constantly lately. Ever since Leilani returned and treated Yvonne, Milford’s attitude toward her had become subtle. Although he was still gentle and considerate on the surface, Tamara could feel that his mind was occupied by something else.
She suppressed her emotions, keeping a sweet smile on her face as she gently placed her hand over his. “Are you tired from work? You look worried.”
Tamara’s large, beautiful eyes looked into Milford’s with utter concern. Judging by her expression alone, no one would suspect she was acting. But could someone’s acting really be this perfect?
Milford looked up at her, his gaze so deep it made Tamara’s heart race. She felt a
premonition that something bad was about to happen.
After a long silence, Milford suddenly spoke. “Tamara, there is something I want to ask you.”
“Hmm? What is it?” Tamara tilted her head, looking at him innocently.
“Back then… the incident where Yvonne fell down the stairs… did Leilani really do it?”
Tamara’s smile froze instantly. Her breath hitched. Her fingers trembled violently, nearly knocking over her water glass. Her heart pounded, blood rushing in her ears.
Why would Milford ask this suddenly? Had Yvonne recovered her memory? Or had Leilani told him something?
Tamara pinched her thigh hard. Milford hadn’t been specific. She couldn’t panic yet. She quickly adjusted her expression, her eyes reddening instantly, her voice trembling with disbelief. “Milford… why, why would you ask that? Did… did my sister say something to you?”
Milford didn’t answer. He just watched her quietly, his gaze sharp enough to pierce through her disguise.
Tamara panicked internally, but outwardly she looked even more aggrieved, tears streaming down her face. “Or… did Yvonne get her memory back?”
No. If Yvonne had really recovered her memory, Milford’s attitude wouldn’t be this tentative probing. And Gloria wouldn’t be so quiet either. It had to be Leilani stirring up trouble.
A vicious glint flashed in her eyes, quickly hidden as she lowered her head, shoulders shaking, voice choked with sobs. “Milford, tell me, is it because my sister spoke ill of me behind my back, and you believed her? You know she’s never liked me, but I never thought… she would slander me like this. And you actually believe her over me? I am your fiancée, Milford…”
Milford remained silent. His detached demeanor chilled Tamara to the bone.

She gritted her teeth and stood up abruptly, tears splashing onto the tablecloth, her voice filled with desperate disappointment. “Since you’d rather believe her than me, we have nothing left to talk about.”
She turned to leave, stumbling as if heartbroken.
Milford frowned and instinctively reached out to grab her wrist. “Tamara!”
With her back to him, Tamara’s shoulders shook as she cried, “Let go…”
Looking at her frail figure, Milford’s heart softened. He sighed. “I didn’t say I didn’t believe
you.”
