The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 96

Thinking of the feelings he was now developing for Leilani, Callahan wanted to back out of the promise he had made to his grandfather to date Paulina’s granddaughter. After all, he was interested in someone else now, and meeting another woman would only cause misunderstandings.

Callahan frowned slightly. “Grandpa, I promised you before, but I don’t have plans for that right now.”

“What do you mean ‘no plans’?” Dante slapped the table, glaring. “Ms. Cheney has brilliant medical skills, a great personality, and she even managed my rehabilitation personally. Where are you going to find such a good girl?”

Seeing his grandson reneging, Dante was furious. They had missed each other several times by accident, and now that both sides had finally agreed, Callahan was backing out?

Callahan rubbed his brow, knowing he was in the wrong, and spoke helplessly. “Your health

has recovered well. Since I don’t have the intention, there’s no need to…”

As soon as Callahan said that, Dante suddenly clutched his chest. “Ouch! My chest hurts!” He leaned back with exaggerated acting. “I can’t make it, my old bones probably won’t last much longer…”

Callahan stared blankly at his grandfather’s clumsy performance. After a few seconds of silence, he finally compromised. “Fine, I’ll go see her. But I’m telling you in advance, I’m meeting her solely to thank her for treating you, not for the reason you’re thinking of. If nothing comes of it, don’t blame me.”

Dante instantly ‘recovered,’ beaming with joy. “That’s the spirit! I’ll send you Ms. Cheney’s contact right away. You guys can get to chatting first.”

As for Callahan’s caveats, Dante didn’t care. If they hit it off, everyone would be happy. If not, since neither of them was the type to cause trouble, it wouldn’t ruin his relationship with Ms. Cheney. Dating was hit or miss; Dante was open-minded about it.

“No need. Since I’m thanking her for the treatment, saying it in person is enough.”

Dante glared. “You brat, what’s wrong with adding her on WhatsApp?”

Callahan stood up, his tone undeniable. “I will meet her, but only to say thank you.”

Dante huffed in annoyance but knew his grandson was stubborn, so he let it drop.

Leaving the family estate, Callahan sat in his car, tapping his fingers lightly on the steering wheel. For some reason, Leilani’s quiet eyes flashed in his mind. His gaze darkened as he started the car and drove into the night.

Seeing his grandson relent, Dante was overjoyed. The moment Callahan left, he eagerly

pulled out his phone and dialed Leilani.

“Hello, Dr. Cheney! Are you back from your trip? We agreed you’d meet my grandson when you returned, no more delays!”

On the other end, Leilani had just showered and was drying her damp hair. Hearing Dante’s excited voice, her lips curled up, her tone gentle. “I just got back today. Mr. Langley, how is your health lately?”

“Great! Thanks to you!” Dante sounded vigorous, then changed the subject mysteriously. “By the way, my grandson agreed to meet you! Since you’re back, let’s set it for a week from now at the Gallery Diner. How about it?”
