Everyone was aware of Selena’s fragile health, and her collapse after their ordeal made them fear she might be relapsing.

Ashton remained composed as he cradled Selena, sensing her heartbeat—fast yet stable under his touch. He brushed his hand against her forehead and then abruptly pulled away.

Rosalie, noticing his reaction, turned pale and asked urgently, “Ashton, how is my sister doing?”

“When shocked, the body pumps out adrenaline, which can exhaust you physically,” Ashton explained. “Besides, it’s raining, and it’s chilly in the woods. Selena was already weak, and getting soaked only made things worse, leading to a serious fever. It’s not life-threatening right now, but we need to act quickly. We can’t afford any delays in checking for complications.”

Without hesitating, Rosalie directed the others to inform the police of the entire incident and then helped Ashton get Selena into the car to head back to the city.

Throughout the drive, Ashton observed Selena through the rearview mirror from time to time, noting her reddened complexion. He told Rosalie to cool her down with a damp cloth.

Amidst all this, Selena mumbled something in her haze, leaving both Ashton and Rosalie in shock.

“Ashton, I’m sorry… I didn’t tell you the truth. After eating the snacks Fraser gave me, I started feeling unwell. Can you help me? I don’t want my sister to worry,” Selena said, her voice wavering with uncertainty. “Fraser, I always thought of you as a true brother, so why did you look so menacing that day?”

Selena’s words, though spoken in a delirious state, peeled back a layer of deception.

The snacks from Fraser were the key!

Rosalie’s mind reeled, struck by a metaphorical thunderbolt, emotions swinging between shock and fury. Beyond her father and Ashton, Fraser was the man they trusted most.

Both she and Selena had embraced him as family. Yet, terrifyingly, it now seemed Fraser was the architect of Selena’s agony!

Ashton remained quiet, his face set in a grim mask. He had harbored doubts about Fraser’s role in Selena’s mysterious relapse of the illness before.

Although he had temporarily set these suspicions aside, fueled by Selena’s recent confessions, his anger flared once more.

Selena, always too kind, had doubts about Fraser but still chose to trust this treacherous man.

After a stretch of silence following Selena’s words, Ashton was about to speak. But Rosalie, with a stern look, cut in before he could begin.

“Ashton, there’s no need for you to get involved. I’ll look into this myself. Selena is very kind-hearted and wouldn’t want to trouble anyone else with her problems. Let’s try to keep this from weighing on her.”

Ashton merely nodded, keeping his thoughts to himself. Knowing Rosalie well by now, he trusted her ability to manage the situation on her own.
