With resolve, Sheila responded, “I know his hiding place. I’m ready to do the right thing and take you to him. Whatever decision you make about him, I won’t beg for mercy on his behalf!”
Sheila’s determination to demonstrate her loyalty was evident.
After a moment’s consideration, Ashton consented. He shared the location with Sheila and then said goodbye to the Campbell sisters.
When he left the hospital, Sheila’s car was already positioned at the front entrance.
As Ashton settled into the passenger seat, he noticed Sheila’s anxious expression.
“My brother… he knew his crime was exposed. He begged me to help him flee the country. I pretended to agree, yet I’ve actually kept him under surveillance. I know his whereabouts, and I’ll lead you to him.”
Ashton nodded. “You’re not going to plead for him, are you?”
Sheila shook her head emphatically. “Absolutely not! He’s brought this on himself. He deserves whatever comes his way. Everyone in our family would shun him for stirring up such trouble!”
With those words, Sheila sped up, driving Ashton toward Phillip’s makeshift refuge.
As they neared the rented apartment, Ashton felt a nagging suspicion. The place was eerily quiet, and the door hung slightly open.
Had Phillip been warned and escaped? Or was this a setup by Sheila and Phillip?
Ashton cast a sideways glance at Sheila, but her expression revealed nothing unusual.
Treading carefully, Ashton gently nudged the door open. Yet, the sight that greeted him was not what he expected. Phillip was indeed there.
He sat silently on the couch, utterly still, showing no signs of life.

In that moment, Ashton understood. Phillip was dead!
Sheila found herself frozen in place, her gaze fixed on Phillip as he sat motionless on the couch. A moment later, she snapped back to reality and hurriedly dashed into the room.
Phillip sat there, his eyes shut and his body lifeless, snuffing out the final flicker of hope that had clung to Sheila’s heart.
Sheila’s eyes grew wide with shock as she took in the sight of her brother’s motionless body, struggling to accept what she was seeing.
Even though she had earlier vowed to Ashton that she would cut all ties with Phillip, going so far as to bring Ashton to confront him, Phillip remained her brother, no matter what had happened between them.
Witnessing him in such a heart-wrenching condition, even Sheila, despite her strength, found herself unable to stop the tears from falling.
Sheila choked back sobs, crying out, “Phillip, why were you so reckless? Why didn’t you just listen to me and stop all those senseless things that drove you to the edge? Was it really so difficult to apologize to Ashton? Did it have to come to this? Did you have to take your life just because you feared the consequences?”
