Chapter 23
Chapter 23:
Ashton had everything laid out at home, just as Emalee had instructed over text. He was ready for her to arrive so they could finalize the last steps of their divorce. The dissolution of their two-year marriage brought a mix of emotions for Ashton. But his pride as a man gave him the determination to move forward and open a new chapter in his life. Ashton lost track of time as he waited. Suddenly, the sound of the doorbell roused him.
He hurried to answer, expecting Emalee. But instead of her, Phillip and Miriam greeted him with their presence. Ashton’s brow creased in concern at their unwelcome presence. Clearly, they weren’t here for anything good.
“What brings you here? Where’s Emalee? We were supposed to finalize our divorce today,” Ashton asked.
Ignoring his questions, Phillip and Miriam pushed past him into the house, their eyes sweeping the room with a sense of entitlement.
Miriam was the first to speak in an aggressive tone. “Ashton, I’ve been more than fair. You’ve been with the James family for two years, and I generously allowed you one day to gather your belongings. That grace period has expired. You must leave this house immediately!”
Confused and angry, Ashton replied, “What are you talking about? What’s all this about?”
With a look of clear disdain, Miriam retorted sharply, “What does it look like we’re doing? We’re taking back what belongs to us. Emalee is too kind, letting you stay in this beautiful house even after your divorce. And you had the audacity to accept it? You seem very comfortable living off her kindness. Do you even realize how shameful that is? You don’t deserve any of this luxury!” After a pause, she added, “This is your last warning. I’m reclaiming this property for Emalee. You need to leave my house now!”
Despite his usual calm demeanor, Ashton couldn’t help but laugh at her absurd claims, though his laughter was full of anger. This house had been his, long before he and Emalee got married. It had nothing to do with her or her family. Seeing their unreasonable behavior, Ashton didn’t see the need to be polite anymore.

He commanded, “Leave my house immediately. Consider this your only warning. If you choose to stay, you’re responsible for the consequences.”
Phillip stepped forward, wearing a smug smile. He touched his cheek and taunted, “Try to hit me right here! Remember, I’m one of the best lawyers in the country. Lay a finger on us, and I’ll make sure you regret it with countless legal battles!”
Ashton narrowed his eyes, giving Phillip a frosty glare. Despite his anger, he remained in his spot.
When Phillip saw Ashton hesitate, it inflated his ego further. He savored his perceived victory and boasted with arrogance, “I’ve already looked into who owns this house. It doesn’t matter who owned it before. As a lawyer, I have ‘evidence’ that will persuade any judge. I can easily secure this house for Emalee in the divorce settlement, and it won’t cost the James family a single dime.” Phillip laughed, confident that he had secured the upper hand.
