Chapter 24
Chapter 24:
Seeing Phillip and Miriam working together in perfect harmony made Ashton pause, his expression darkening with a frown. He chose to hold back, knowing better than to act impulsively, especially since Phillip was a professional lawyer. The provocations from Phillip likely served as an attempt to push him into anger and into a legal trap. With this realization, Ashton scoffed and shot back, “So, you two really came prepared, huh? Resorting to such low tactics to take me down. Shameless, absolutely shameless!”
Phillip savored the control he had over Ashton, his power making him grin with satisfaction. Ashton’s accusations only fueled his arrogance, prompting him to laugh even louder.
“So what if I’m shameless? I’ve got the skills to back it up. Ashton, if you think you’re so capable, why not hire a lawyer to face me? But looking at you, it’s doubtful you could afford anyone competent. You’d probably end up with a public defender at best!” Phillip taunted with a sneer.
Then, as a thought struck him, Phillip added, “Oh, right, didn’t you cozy up to some wealthy lady? Maybe she can bail you out. But even if she agrees, it won’t make a difference. Money alone can’t compete with me in the courtroom!”
Beside them, Miriam couldn’t hide her satisfaction. She regarded Ashton with scorn, as if he were nothing more than a pitiful beggar.
“Phillip, you really are the prodigy Emalee recognized in you! With you supporting the James family, our future of prosperity and honor is secure!” Miriam turned to Ashton, her voice ringing with triumph. “Ashton, did you catch what Phillip said? This place now belongs to the James family. If you have any sense, you’ll pack your things and leave our house! If you choose to stay, don’t come complaining when I call the police and have you arrested for trespassing!” she stated proudly.
Then, turning back to Phillip, she inquired, “Phillip, you’re a professional lawyer. Would there be any issue with me calling the police to have him arrested?”
Phillip responded immediately and confidently, “Not at all! With me here, if Ashton even considers touching us, he’ll be in jail for life!” Ashton watched their smug expressions, his demeanor cold. Aware that they were baiting him, he knew he had to stay composed.

Taking a deep breath to steady his voice, Ashton asked, “Does what you’re doing truly reflect Emalee’s wishes?” The two just scoffed, ignoring his question.
Ashton’s gaze lingered on them a moment longer before he pulled out his phone to call Emalee. The call connected quickly.
Trying to maintain a calm demeanor, Ashton said, though his voice betrayed a hint of force, reflective of the strain of the past two days, “Emalee, we were married, and I respect your decisions. Since we’re no longer together, let’s part on good terms. But why strip me of my last refuge? Isn’t that a bit much?”
