Just as Ashton was about to respond, the sharp ringing of the phone on Effie’s desk interrupted him.
When Effie saw the caller’s name flashing on the screen, her demeanor changed instantly. She grabbed her phone, and without waiting for Ashton to speak, she turned her back to him, crossed her legs, and chatted with the person on the other end of the line.
Ashton’s patience had finally reached its limit. He looked at the receptionist’s back with a frown and said in a slightly raised voice,
“It’s still working time. Can you at least show…”
“Some respect for your job and me?”
But instead of taking the hint and correcting her behavior, Effie got impatient. She glared at Ashton in irritation.
She rolled her eyes and casually grabbed a form from the desk. Without any care, she tossed it toward him and said,
“Go there and fill out this form. Return it to me once you’re done.”
Ashton’s patience finally snapped. The receptionist’s dismissive attitude irritated him. His expression hardened as he faced her and said coldly,
“I’m not here to fill out any forms. I want to see the department director now.”
When Effie heard this, she scoffed, displaying her usual arrogance.
She assumed he was just another disgruntled visitor upset over her attitude and trying to threaten her by demanding to see the director.
Effie had been working here for many years and had encountered countless people like Ashton before. They were demanding, assertive, and expected everything to go their way. So, she wasn’t intimidated in the least.
She didn’t even bother to hide her contempt. She leaned back in her chair, crossed her arms over her chest, and sneered coldly,

People wait for weeks for an appointment with our director, but here you are, thinking you’ll get to him just like that. Who do you think you are?”
She continued,
“You know, there are tons of people like you. The same attitude, the same entitlement, always stirring up trouble. I deal with at least a hundred of you every year. If I were you, I’d just leave now. Otherwise, I will be forced to call security to escort you out.”
At this point, Ashton could no longer be patient with Effie’s unreasonable behavior. His expression turned icy as he looked at her and said coldly,
“Fine, then. If you don’t want to do your job, I’ll call your director myself. Just make sure you won’t regret the consequences of your attitude.”
Effie pursed her lips and shot back,
“Oh, please! Anyone can talk big. Look at yourself. You’re so arrogant. How dare you brag that you can make our director come here? Do you think anyone will believe you? Let me tell you, I just need to push a button here, and you’ll be banned from this place for the rest of your life.”
