Thrilled at the possibility of catching a big fish, Effie was about to call security to apprehend Ashton when she suddenly heard hurried footsteps.

To her surprise, Vincent came racing down the stairs.

At first, she was startled, but then she assumed that it was nearly time to clock out, and perhaps the director was hurrying to a social event. Besides, how could someone with questionable information possibly be connected to the director? It must be a coincidence!

So, Effie didn’t notice the grim look on Vincent’s face as he approached her.

Instead, she took the opportunity to complain. “Mr. Lee, you arrived just in time. There’s a jerk here claiming he wants to see you, but he’s just causing a scene. I stopped him right away and was about to blacklist him. Can you believe it? All his identity information is marked as unknown! It’s clear he’s using a fake identity for some illegal activities. Thank goodness I was diligent, or he might have gotten away with it!”

Effie spoke with pride, convinced that she had achieved something significant and that the director was witnessing her efforts. She was certain it would guarantee her a promotion by the end of the year.

However, when Vincent heard that this young man’s identity was labeled as unknown, a cold sweat broke out on his forehead. It confirmed his worst fears—this young man was indeed the special agent sent by the higher-up. Seeing Ashton’s displeased expression only fueled Vincent’s anger. He shouted, “You idiot! Are you trying to get me killed?”

While Effie stood there, swelling with pride at what she thought was her victory over Ashton, she suddenly heard the director’s angry voice. She assumed he was scolding Ashton.

She nodded vigorously, eager to align with what she thought was her boss’s opinion. “Yes, that’s right! How dare you, a troublemaker, use a fake identity to deceive us! What else could you possibly be here for but to harm our director?”

Effie then grabbed her walkie-talkie and called security, turning back to Vincent with sparkling eyes, expecting praise and perhaps even a reward for handling the situation so efficiently.

However, the moment their eyes met, Effie felt a sharp unease. Why did it seem like he was glaring at her coldly? A chill ran down her spine.

“How long are you going to keep playing dumb?” Vincent snapped coldly. “Pack up your things and go home. Hand in your resignation letter tomorrow morning and don’t bother me anymore. I am very busy these days. Hurry up and leave now.”

At first, Effie didn’t understand what he meant. She stood frozen, trying to process his words, but eventually, the realization hit her. With a quiver in her voice, she asked, “Sir, are… are you firing me?”

Vincent snorted derisively. “I’m giving you the chance to resign on your own terms. Don’t make me fire you. That will stain your resume and make your future job search much harder.”

All the color drained from Effie’s face. She had used her connections just to secure this position, and losing it would mean losing something many others only dreamed of. The thought of throwing it away was unbearable.

“Sir, what do you mean? Our department doesn’t dismiss employees like this, right? I admit I have some shortcomings, especially with attendance. I often arrive late and leave early. I’ve been a bit lax, but please, give me another chance. I promise it won’t happen again. I’ll improve my performance,” Effie begged, tears streaming down her face. She looked utterly miserable.
