Meanwhile, Ashton remained out of sight, discreetly watching the proceedings from the back of the line. Aware of the Marquez brothers’ schemes, Ashton was vigilant for any spies they might have sent.

As news of Jeff’s arrival spread, more job seekers began to show up, creating a steady flow behind Ashton.

While monitoring the crowd, Ashton soon spotted a young man with a cocky attitude, escorted by several others, making their way forward by cutting through the line.

From the resumes in their hands, it was clear they were here for the job too.

As Ashton scowled, the group had already slipped ahead of him.

They attempted to shove Ashton aside, but no matter how hard they pushed, he wouldn’t budge an inch.

Annoyed by Ashton’s resistance, the group grew angry, and one of them snapped, “How can you be so rude? Don’t you see what’s happening? Step back!”

Ashton nearly burst out laughing from frustration. He was standing his ground against line-cutters, and they had the nerve to call him rude?

He stood firm and retorted, “We’re all here for job interviews. Why should I move aside for you?”

The young man they were defending watched on with a smug frown, too proud to engage with Ashton directly.

Another companion, however, yelled, “Look, not everyone is on the same level here. Nolan comes from a family well-known in the antiques world. Do you understand what that means? Don’t let his young age deceive you; he knows far more than you ever will. He’s handled treasures you’ve only dreamed of!”

“That’s right! Nolan is doing Jeff a favor by being here. When Jeff meets him, he’ll hire him right away. Letting him cut in line is just saving time for everyone!”

Ashton scoffed, “And what if he doesn’t get hired?”

The companions laughed mockingly. One of them retorted, “Some people are naturally inferior, especially clueless ones like you who don’t know how to flatter. If you’d buttered up Nolan, maybe he’d have vouched for you with Jeff. But now, you might as well give up. With him here, you don’t stand a chance at landing this job!”

Ashton’s situation captured the attention of many job seekers. However, the aggressive behavior of Nolan McCoy and his group intimidated most onlookers. While they wanted to intervene, their fear of involvement led them to remain silent, despite their discontent.

A girl, just a few steps ahead of Ashton, could no longer hold back and stepped forward. She turned, her anger evident, and defended Ashton, exclaiming, “Hey! You guys are going too far! It’s already bad enough that you’re cutting in line and ganging up, but mocking someone for standing up to you? Have you no shame?”

The mockers, surprised by her boldness, paused and turned their attention to her.

“Oh, so you think you can defend him? Looks like you’re looking for a hard lesson and to lose out on this job opportunity!” one of Nolan’s companions said.

Defiantly, the girl responded, “I’m not here for an interview with you. What makes you think I won’t secure the job?”
