Chapter 520:

When Jacoby saw Ashton’s stern face, he wanted to argue. But he also realized this was indeed the case. At this moment, jumping was their only way to survive.

But when he looked out the window and saw the trees and scenery outside blurring into streaks of green and gray as the car raced forward, his heart skipped a beat, and his stomach churned. Jumping out at this speed seemed insane.

He was already scared at their current speed of 37 mph. If Ashton increased it to 60 mph, he feared he wouldn’t die from the bomb but from the fall.

“Ashton, is this really the only way? I don’t dare to jump at this speed,” Jacoby said in a trembling voice, looking at Ashton nervously.

Seeing Jacoby dawdling, Ashton became impatient. His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, and his voice was more forceful now. “Stop dilly-dallying. When you jump, remember to cover your head with your hands, bend your knees, and curl up. It will minimize the impact and friction injuries.”

But Jacoby was still reluctant. “Isn’t there a safer way? How about you drive a little further? I remember there’s a river up ahead. Can I jump into the river?”

Ashton shot Jacoby a sharp, frustrated look. He replied sternly, “I am not sure if the bomb is triggered by speed. It may explode after the car travels a certain distance. So, if you don’t want to die, you will jump now. This is the only way you can survive.” Ashton’s stern warning sent shivers down Jacoby’s spine.

With adrenaline surging through his veins and his will to survive stronger than ever, Jacoby clenched his fists, shut his eyes, and took one final deep breath. He shouted to psych himself up, flung the door open, and leaped out of the speeding car.

Ashton didn’t really care about Jacoby’s fate. But he realized that Jacoby was more valuable alive than dead. So, when he saw Jacoby jump, he floored the accelerator to the bottom, quickly unfastened his seatbelt, and dove out of the driver’s seat, protecting his head.

While Jacoby hit the ground with a bone-rattling thud, screaming as he rolled awkwardly, Ashton executed a near-perfect landing. He skillfully rolled to the side of the road, stopping with only minor scrapes on his forearms and knees. He stood up, dusted himself off, and watched the car continue to drive on the empty road.

Eventually, the car veered off and crashed into the guardrail on the roadside. The loud explosion echoed in the stillness of the night, and the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

With one last fiery burst, flames shot into the sky, illuminating the moonless night. Even from 30 feet away, Ashton felt the ground shake from the explosion.

Ashton stood still, fixing his gaze on the burning car as flames flickered and danced against the night sky. His expression was steely, void of any relief after narrowly escaping death.

He felt a knot of tension tightening in his chest. The situation was worse than he had anticipated. Not only was he eager to investigate the Dark Night Organization, but it seemed they also saw him as a threat and wanted to get rid of him.

The Marquez family, in particular, did not hesitate to use Jacoby as bait to lure him into a trap.
