Chapter 54
Chapter 54:
Miriam fixed her gaze on Ashton with a look of deep contempt, completely oblivious to the fact that Phillip had fallen silent all of a sudden. She didn’t grasp the full situation as she noticed Aaron taking a seat next to Ashton, her smirk broadening.
Mockingly, Miriam said, “So, you’re the lawyer Ashton has brought in? I’ll admit, you do look the part. But sadly, you’re up against my future son-in-law. You’re outmatched!” She then gave Phillip a nudge; he was looking downward, silent as stone. At this point, she still hadn’t picked up on the oddness of Phillip’s silence.
Pushing him, she said, “Phillip, why are you just sitting there? Dismiss this lawyer Ashton has brought! Ashton, your efforts are futile. Prepare to forfeit the money!”
Phillip gritted his teeth, trying to communicate with Miriam through a meaningful look. But before he could articulate his thoughts, Aaron took the floor.
“I’m well-informed about your contention with Mr. Baldwin,” Aaron stated. “Your current approach is untenable. As a professional, I must urge you to desist. Should this escalate to legal proceedings, considering the shared marital assets, it will not be Mr. Baldwin who incurs costs. It will be you.”
Ashton waved off the concern with a casual flick of his hand. “I’m not seeking any financial gain from the James family. All I desire is to be left in peace.”
Upon hearing this, Miriam let out a scornful laugh. She glared at Aaron and scoffed. “You seem rather full of yourself, don’t you? Are you even aware of who my future son-in-law is? He’s Phillip Watson, a seasoned lawyer freshly returned from overseas! Should we choose to, Ashton won’t retain a penny!”
Ashton had noticed Phillip’s quiet, dejected state earlier. It was obvious Phillip understood his limitations. Miriam, however, was still oblivious to them.
With a soft chuckle, Ashton turned to Aaron. “Mr. Gray, she seems quite confident. Think you can handle this?”
Aaron flashed a confident smile and responded, “I’ve encountered many like her. Everyone’s confident before the trial starts. But don’t worry. If they dare to take it to court, I can guarantee a victory. Just watch.”

Miriam was about to respond when she felt something wasn’t right. Phillip had been silent since Aaron’s arrival.
With a frown, she nudged Phillip. “Phillip, why are you so quiet? Speak up! They’re walking all over us!”
Phillip seemed troubled. He wanted to speak, but his mouth was dry, and his confidence was waning. Facing him was the renowned lawyer, Aaron. How could he possibly stand a chance?
Seeing Miriam’s anxious expression, Phillip managed a forced smile. In a subdued tone, he admitted, “Ashton brought Aaron in. I can’t handle him by myself.”
Phillip felt a mix of confusion and anger. Against any other lawyer, Phillip would have felt bold enough to confront or even persuade them against representing Ashton. But with Aaron, it was a different matter entirely. He was a top-notch lawyer, far beyond Phillip’s reach.
What perplexed Phillip more was how Ashton could afford such a high-profile lawyer.
As he pondered, Rosalie approached, bringing two cups of coffee for Aaron and Ashton. The sight of Rosalie only heightened Phillip’s fears. After the previous night’s events and the severe reprimand from his father, who was frantically trying to save their family’s partnership, Phillip knew he couldn’t risk antagonizing Rosalie any further.
Wordlessly, he seized Miriam’s hand, ready to flee.
