Chapter 579
Chapter 579:
Ashton didn’t want any misunderstanding, so he even smiled and nodded after greeting Zane. However, Zane perceived his greeting as another provocation.
Ashton frowned and said, “I only want to greet you. Why are you so hostile to me? Is it because Alisha said I’m her boyfriend? If Alisha and I were really boyfriend and girlfriend, shouldn’t you respect her choice and wish her well? Or do you think Alisha will fall in love with you if you target me like this?”
Zane clenched his fists tightly and gritted his teeth. Ashton claimed to be greeting him, but wasn’t Ashton mocking him now? If they weren’t in the police station at this moment, surrounded by his colleagues, he would have punched Ashton in the face.
Although he restrained himself, his face twisted in anger.
Finally, he could not help but snap angrily, “Isn’t it clear to you yet? I have always taken great care of Alisha. She should belong only to me. But you took her away. How can you expect me to be kind to you? Alisha and I are both police officers, so we are a perfect match. Her father, who is my chief, values me highly.
He even trains me as his successor. In a few years, when her father retires, I’ll be the director of Staville Police Department. And you? No matter how powerful you are, you are just a businessman. How can Alisha’s father like you?”
Ashton could only sigh inwardly. Zane’s aggressive stance now signaled that Zane wouldn’t believe him and might even think he was mocking him, even if he attempted to explain that he and Alisha were just friends.
Ashton originally wanted to cooperate with Zane, but judging from the current situation, it seemed the chance was slim.
As soon as Zane finished his rant, Rayden suddenly appeared behind him and hurriedly said in a cheerful voice, “I am very sorry for keeping you waiting so long. I was held up by the meeting.”
Zane instinctively turned around, only to see Rayden walking toward them with a broad smile.

Then, he glanced back at Ashton with a smug look and said to Rayden, “It’s okay, Mr. Smith. I’ve just come back. You’re too kind to come out and greet me. It’s…”
Zane paused mid-sentence and stared at Rayden intently. It was only then that he realized that Rayden’s gaze was not directed at him at all.
As expected, Rayden walked past Zane and went straight to Ashton. With a warm smile, he reached out to shake hands with Ashton.
He said, “Mr. Baldwin, thank you for coming. I hope we’ve been treating you well.”
Zane had initially prepared to parade his importance before Ashton, eager to boast about how much Rayden valued him—so much so that Rayden himself had come down to the lobby to welcome him back from his investigation.
Yet, the sight before him doused his pride like a bucket of cold water. The person Rayden personally greeted wasn’t him; it was Ashton. Zane’s face, already clouded, darkened further as anger simmered within him.
But beneath that anger, a deeper worry gnawed at him: Rayden’s attitude toward Ashton.
Could it be Rayden saw something special in Ashton—something that hinted at a future son-in-law?
