Chapter 605
Chapter 605:
Ashton watched her departure with a contemplative gaze.
Simultaneously, an odd realization struck him. Despite the size of the resort, he recognized the same few faces repeatedly — the waiters who showed them to their rooms, the guide in the orchard, and now the strained restaurant staff.
Given the sprawling expanse of the mountainous resort, had Abrial not reserved it exclusively for the day, they’d likely be hosting a bustling crowd of tourists. Yet, the handful of staff present seemed insufficient for such a potential influx.
Ashton’s suspicions deepened; something was amiss at the resort, and Abrial’s mysterious vanishing act was surely linked.
Lost in his thoughts, Ashton was pulled back to the present when the waitress reappeared. She set down a plate bearing a…
beautifully adorned cake and a selection of snacks were set on Ashton’s table. As he had suspected, while the food emitted an inviting aroma, it carried an underlying, strange scent.
Ashton, being a doctor, instantly recognized the scent as a local herb famous for its sleep-inducing effects.
This herb, while not lethal, was notorious for its ability to swiftly render someone unconscious.
Intent on discovering their motives, Ashton chose to feign ignorance. He lavishly complimented the meal and began eating with apparent relish.
In a swift, unseen motion, he managed to eject the herb-infused cake from his mouth when no eyes were on him and simulated a deep yawn, collapsing onto the table as though the herb had taken effect.
The waitress, unable to contain her excitement, burst out, “We’ve got him! He’s fallen for it!”
Her shout immediately drew the attention of the other staff members, who had been pretending to be busy. They halted their pretense and began closing in on Ashton.

But just as they moved to seize him, a calm yet authoritative voice cut through the tension.
“This doesn’t concern you. Move out of the way!”
Ashton kept up his act, pretending to be unconscious, but he recognized that voice in an instant. It was Red Jack, the notorious Diamond-level assassin from the Dark Night Organization!
As soon as Red Jack’s voice cut through the air, the crowd around Ashton parted, albeit with some hesitation, clearing a path for Red Jack.
He sauntered over to where Ashton was hunched over the table, eyeing him critically from head to toe.
“Come on, Ashton, cut the act. I know you’re not unconscious. You’re just waiting for a chance to leap at us with that fork, right?” Red Jack taunted.
Caught out, Ashton abandoned his pretense and raised his head, fixing a chilling gaze on the smug-faced Red Jack before him.
“Aren’t I the one you’re supposed to be after? What have you done with Abrial? Where is she?” Ashton demanded, his voice cold with fury.
