Zane spoke with a certainty that rang hollow to Alisha, as if he’d conjured this tale from thin air. Unfazed, she countered, “If that’s his so-called motive, then why leave the body out in the open? Why not erase every trace?”

She took a step closer, her gaze unwavering. “The scene is fishy, to say the least. I have every reason to believe this wasn’t even the true crime scene. Until we’ve dug to the roots of this case, I refuse to believe Ashton is guilty. I’ll get to the bottom of this.”

Zane, familiar with Alisha’s stubborn streak, merely shrugged, a smug smile creeping onto his face. “Suit yourself. The evidence points straight to Ashton. There’s nothing he can use to pull himself out of this pit. His indictment is practically inked and dried.”

He cast her a condescending glance. “Alisha, you need to wise up. There’s no use in hanging on to scum like him. He’s not worth your loyalty or your time.”

Alisha responded with a frosty glare, refusing to dignify his remark with an answer.

Instead, she tilted her head and asked, “And what about you? Why are you here alone? If you’re so convinced Ashton is guilty, you can’t be here to gather evidence in his defense, right?”

Caught off guard by her question, Zane shifted uncomfortably and muttered, “I’m here to reinvestigate and collect further proof. As head of the criminal investigation team, is it so odd for me to follow up on leads?”

Though Alisha couldn’t argue with his logic, she caught a flash of something—a fleeting glimmer of panic in his expression. Her suspicion toward him deepened, ever so slightly.

Noticing her change in demeanor, Zane quickly adopted a stern tone. “Alisha, you don’t suspect me, do you?” he demanded, an edge in his voice. “I’ll have you know, your father has already issued Ashton’s arrest warrant. His charges are as good as sealed. There’s no escaping this shadow of guilt!”

Zane turned abruptly and left after his last words, for reasons unknown.

The news caused Alisha’s expression to darken.

She understood all too well that an arrest warrant for Ashton signified the police were convinced of his guilt, nearly concluding the case.

With time running out to exonerate Ashton, Alisha instructed Abrial to keep the crime scene secure and then hurried to the police station to consult her father.

Upon spotting Rayden, she immediately questioned, “Dad, how can you proceed with this arrest? This case is filled with unresolved issues.”

Her father’s expression darkened upon her brisk approach and immediate interrogation.

Rayden took a moment to smoke a cigarette in silence before responding with resignation, “Alisha, I realize Ashton saved your life, and I too want to clear his name. However, the situation is more complicated than you understand. Levi, the grandfather of the deceased Craig, holds significant influence. With his grandson now dead, we owe him a swift response.”

In disbelief, Alisha stared at her father. “Are you saying you’re going to let Ashton take the fall?”
