Leonardo flinched, shrinking back in fear. He quickly started to explain, with Hamlin chiming in from time to time. As they spoke, Gustave’s expression began to change.

Gustave’s eyes narrowed. “Exactly. Ashton’s mental power is far beyond that of most people. In a way, he became a lightning rod for the force of the treasure, which is why his condition is so much worse than anyone else’s. Something similar happened before. He made a grave mistake while he was resisting the force of the Glorious Heritage, and that mistake caused him so much shame that he left my place and stopped learning from me.”
