Ashton sighed, “So, using you for even a trivial wish like a dollar would ultimately lead to my demise, correct?”
“The outcome for every dream that becomes reality is ultimately the same. Have you any more questions?” Quills asked.
Ashton nodded, indicating he had further questions. “I’m confused. Why do you assist humans but then demand a price in return?”
Quills’ and Snake Fang’s tones conveyed their growing impatience, yet they responded, “Everything has a cost, much like you pay for merchandise or use wood to feed a fire.”
Understanding, Ashton continued, “If your powers can be wielded without your consent, what’s the value in gaining your approval? What advantages come with earning your approval, and how can it be achieved?”
Quills, clearly frustrated, finally grew tired of Ashton’s constant questioning. “Do you not realize you’re asking too many questions?”
Even Snake Fang, typically composed, showed signs of irritation. “I believe you’ve learned sufficiently. We are not obliged to continue this discussion. You must now keep your word and return the forces to us.”
Ashton, still filled with doubts, was taken aback by the spirits’ sudden impatience.
With a cold smile, Ashton said, “The forces remain within me. Is this how you plead? If so, I am inclined to keep these so-called forces indefinitely rather than returning them.”
Quills and Snake Fang reacted with fury. “You don’t have the authority to withhold the forces! If you refuse to return them, you cannot escape this realm of consciousness!”
Narrowing his eyes and chuckling, Ashton replied, “If I recall correctly, you said you invaded my mind, right? This means this is my territory. I am free to come and go as I wish, and you cannot stop me.”

At that moment, Ashton focused his thoughts, and the surroundings, previously cast in a bronze tint, swiftly returned to their original state.
In Ashton’s mind, he had been deep in conversation with Quills and Snake Fang for what felt like an eternity. But in reality, only a few seconds had passed. From Gustave’s perspective, Ashton had only paused after receiving the quill pen and notebook, and then seemed to return to normal without missing a beat.
Gustave raised an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued. “Ashton, what’s going on with you? Are you okay?”
Shaking himself out of his trance, Ashton nodded and set the quill pen and notebook down on a nearby table. “When I touched these items, the spirits within them invaded my mind. Have you ever experienced something like this?”
Gustave’s eyes widened in surprise, and he quickly shook his head. “No, I haven’t. The Glorious Heritage I received was a gift from the Baldwin family, but I’ve never had an experience like that. It seems I haven’t truly been recognized by it.”
“I haven’t been recognized either,” Ashton replied. “They only want me to return their forces. I used that as leverage to extract some information from them.”
