Ashton, trying to make sense of this, responded with a quiet understanding, “So, it’s like confusing the gas pedal with the brake and causing a crash?”

“That is one way to understand it,” the voice acknowledged. “As for granting wishes, that’s not within our power.”

The admission startled Ashton.

If they didn’t have the ability to fulfill wishes, how had the three influential families achieved their immense success?

“Impossible! Didn’t you help three people fulfill their wishes, making them billionaires?” Ashton pressed, his voice rising with urgency.

The voice replied, “No, we don’t have that ability. They misunderstood and misused our forces. Once our forces reach their expiration date, everything they gained will be lost, and they will die.”

Ashton was initially surprised by the responses from the two spirits.

Regaining his composure, he asked, “Do you know how they fulfilled their wishes?”

“Yes,” the calmer spirit replied.

The other, more eager to explain, said, “We each operate under unique code names. For instance, I am known as Quills, and my form is a quill pen. My special talent allows me to induce hallucinations in a designated target.”

“The name given to me is Snake Fang; I am embodied by a notebook,” the second spirit added. “My power involves altering a creature’s perception with psychological triggers. We once had a companion named Bamboo Shadow, capable of prolonging the lifespan of any object.”

After listening to the introductions from Quills and Snake Fang, Ashton felt even more bewildered. The abilities of these three items of Glorious Heritage didn’t appear to have anything to do with granting wishes.

Quills explained, “Individually, our abilities aren’t all that powerful, but when we combine them, we can create a new, more powerful one that has the effect of making wishes come true. In simple terms, this ability allows dreams to be brought into the real world. However, no matter how beautiful the dream may seem, it is still just an illusion. Once our powers reach their limit, the dream will fade, and everything the dreamer gained from it will be lost, ultimately leading to their death.”

“That’s not possible; once deceased, a person’s soul departs their body. What we could bring back would merely be a shell, similar to a zombie, surviving no more than thirty-two years.”

Puzzled, Ashton asked, “Why only thirty-two years?”

He received a quick response. “Although our individual powers have their own expiration dates, our joint ability isn’t bound by these. This misleads people into believing we can eternally satisfy their desires. In truth, every thirty-two years, we must adapt and blend into human society, changing our shapes. Consequently, the duration of our joint power is also thirty-two years. Even if the wish were as simple as creating a dollar, it would vanish after thirty-two years.”

Reflecting on this, Ashton murmured, “A life devoted to a thirty-two-year dream scarcely differs from a granted wish.”
