Taking a deep breath, she made up her mind.
Abruptly standing, she moved beside Ashton and cradled his head gently.
She reassured him, saying, “You always shoulder all the responsibility, no matter what. But in this situation, we’re all victims, whether it’s you, me, or Rosalie. Why do you insist on carrying the weight alone? Trust me with this. I’ll speak to Rosalie. You’re not experienced with soothing words, but I am. You’re my first man, but I’ve had experience with girlfriends before!”
Ashton, unsure whether to take Abrial’s words as a joke or as sincere, felt a wave of relief wash over him.
Just as he nodded, about to respond, a voice called out, “Abrial? What are you doing here?”
Hearing this, Ashton felt Abrial stiffen. He withdrew from her embrace and turned to identify the newcomer, catching sight of a couple approaching them.
Meanwhile, Ashton observed that Abrial’s expression had grown notably serious.
Ashton immediately noticed Abrial’s tense expression, sensing that she had a history with the couple.
“What’s wrong? Could that man be your ex-boyfriend?” Ashton whispered.
Abrial’s face tightened, but she said nothing. Instead, she grabbed Ashton’s hand and tried to turn away, clearly wanting to avoid any confrontation with the couple.
Recognizing the tension in the air, Ashton didn’t press further and followed her lead in silence.
But just as they turned to leave, the woman in the couple called out with a sarcastic sneer. “I remember you once claimed you were only into women. What’s this, then? Have you finally switched sides? Realized how good it feels to be with a man, huh?”
Abrial froze mid-step, her body trembling, not with fear, but with barely contained anger.
She turned back sharply, her face livid. “You two bastards! Get out of my sight! If I see you again, I swear I’ll beat you both senseless!” Her outburst, however, seemed to amuse rather than intimidate the couple.
The man, exuding an air of smug refinement, chuckled dismissively and said nothing, while the woman clinging to his arm smirked triumphantly. “Still pretending to be a man, I see; do you think shouting like that makes you more masculine?” the woman taunted.
Abrial snapped, unable to hold back any longer. “Lucretia Rodgers, you deceitful bitch! What right do you have to talk to me like that? Back then, I gave you everything! Anything you wanted, I made sure you had it. Hell, I even paid for your tuition when you went abroad to study and build your career!” Her fists clenched at her sides as her voice wavered, the pain of betrayal seeping through her words. “And how did you repay me? You found a man and dumped me right after you left. And now you’ve got the nerve to show up here, with him, just to mock me? How dare you!”
The woman, Lucretia, responded with an infuriating smirk. “Oh, don’t make it sound so dramatic. People break up all the time, don’t they? Besides, I just didn’t see a future with you. Let’s be real here, so what if you’re the eldest daughter of the Carter family? You’re not even favored in your own household. You probably spent every penny of your savings trying to impress me back then. So, tell me, should I have stayed with someone who couldn’t even secure her own place in her family?
