Chapter 22:

Adrian’s POV

I walked back to my quarters, my mind racing with thoughts.

“How on earth did she survive? What must have happened?” My thoughts were endless. I couldn’t stop wondering, trying to connect the dots, to solve the puzzle, and to understand exactly what was going on.

Sheelah had already told me what to do that fateful evening. We had planned it out so carefully that no one would ever trace the death back to us. I had dug a hole in a hidden part of the woods, where no one would ever notice. It was a place where all evidence would be lost, where no one would see how or when it happened. We planned it in such a way that it would seem as though she got lost or, more likely, ran away. The plan was set; all that was left was to put it into action.

Of course, I heard footsteps, which made me retreat, but the job was almost ninety-nine point nine percent complete. She was already gasping for breath when I left her to die in her pool of blood.

I heard one of the men from that fateful day running after me, shouting for me to stop, but I was sure he didn’t see me.

I rushed back to the house to inform Sheelah about what had happened. She was disappointed and thought that Alpha Christian must have sent someone to intercept the plan. But then I remembered—he had been away at a meeting. A series of thoughts ran through our minds as we exchanged uneasy glances.

“I just hope and pray that Alpha Christian wasn’t part of that interception. If he was, we’re done for!” Sheelah said, looking troubled and confused.

“That’s what I pray for too,” I replied. “Come on, go wash your hands. I can see bloodstains. Aren’t you smart enough to know what that means?” she said, pointing at my hands.

I dashed to the bathroom to wash up and change into fresh clothes.

Minutes later, she said, giving me a stern look.

Alpha Christian came in shortly after we finished talking about him. He walked in looking exhausted and famished.

Sheelah went to greet him, taking his suitcase from him.

“Welcome, darling. How did your day go?” she asked, extending her hand to take the suitcase. He shoved her away immediately. My heart sank.

“Get away from me! Where’s Amira?” he asked, looking around the room. I let out a sigh, almost audible enough to be heard.

“She stepped out a little while ago. I thought you might have seen her when you came in,” I replied, trying to hide my mood and keep a straight face.

“Why did you allow her to go out this late? Do you have any idea how dangerous it could be for her?” he said, his voice tense as he looked around the house, asking no one in particular.

His mood was a mix of anger and worry.

“Once she gets back, make sure she sees me,” he said, walking out on us. I let out another sigh of relief.

“It’s settled,” Sheelah said with a smirk.

At least if I couldn’t have my way with Amira, I could have my way with Sheelah. She had always treated me as if I were less of a man. This was my chance to prove her wrong and show her what masculinity really felt like.
