Sydney's phone buzzed, the familiar ringtone shattering the night's stillness. She reached out, switched on the bedside lamp, and answered, her heart pounding.

"Someone's digging up your past."

The words hit her like a punch, leaving her reeling.

"How is this happening?" she whispered, anxiety gnawing at her insides.

"Watch your back," the caller warned before the line went dead.

Panic set in. Why was her past being unearthed now? Restless, she sat up in bed, her mind racing.

Rowan, her partner, had been distant lately, using her "scent" as an excuse to sleep separately. He hadn't explicitly said it, but Sydney knew what he meant. She glanced at her legs, a dark expression clouding her face.

Josefina woke up feeling refreshed and stretched lazily as she made her way downstairs. Her grandparents were on the couch, deep in conversation with Hattie and Garrett.

"Hattie, your birthday's this Sunday, and I've booked a spot at our favorite diner. If you wanted a big bash, you know I'd throw you one," Garrett said with a warm smile.

Hattie responded, "A family meal is all I want. Too many guests might overwhelm Josie. Now that we've found her, all I want is for our family to live peacefully."

Emily nodded, "Ever since I woke up, all I've wanted is a quiet life."

Josefina joined in, "Mom, let me handle your birthday plans. I've got it covered."

Hattie stood up, walked over to Josefina, and pulled her into a seat. "Josie, you're always so busy. Don't stress over this. Actually, why don't you take a break from school? There's more to learn from the world than from books. Travel with me instead."

Garrett laughed, "Most parents want their kids to focus on their studies, and here you are, encouraging her to take a break."

Hattie continued, "All I want is for my child to be safe and happy. Schooling doesn't matter as long as she's provided for."

Josefina, touched by her family's concern, contemplated. "What if I could graduate early?"

"That would make us all happy," her family agreed, never doubting Josefina's capabilities.

"Then I'll speak to the principal about it. If possible, I might graduate ahead of schedule," Josefina declared, earning her family's enthusiastic support.
