Chapter 886
Chapter 886:
Once inside, Fernanda spotted Toby first. He welcomed her warmly, asking about her night.
“I slept well,” she assured him. “Don’t worry, I can take care of myself.” Toby patted her shoulder, sighing. The previous night, Duran had expressed his disapproval of their recent treatment of Fernanda.
Toby was taken aback by Jade’s hostility toward Fernanda and puzzled by his two sisters’ refusal to let Fernanda stay overnight. With unexpected guests filling his house, there was no spare room for Fernanda.
“If I were Fernanda, I would be heartbroken,” Duran had remarked. “Dad, this isn’t right. Even if Aunt Gracie erred, that had nothing to do with Fernanda. Fernanda has suffered enough. We shouldn’t add to her distress.”
Toby had reluctantly agreed and then escorted Fernanda to join Jade and the rest.
Jade stood out in her black cotton dress, combat boots, and a long white down jacket, her makeup subtly enhancing her features. Upon noticing Fernanda, Jade involuntarily compared herself to her.
Fernanda was barefaced, her small face showing hardly any emotion. Her eyes, slightly downturned, gave her a detached air, making her seem distant like winter frost. She carried a natural sense of dignity, and it wasn’t put on; it was a true part of who she was. It seemed almost rude to gaze at her for too long.
Touching her own face, Jade felt a pang of jealousy when her beauty was overshadowed by Fernanda’s. She decided to initiate a conversation with Fernanda.
“Fernanda, I heard your engagement with the Harper family was called off?”
Having researched Fernanda online the previous night, Jade discovered that she was not without merits, boasting accomplishments such as winning the school beauty pageant and the championship of the college league in Esaham. But Jade dismissed the details, brushing them off as minor.
Winning the school beauty pageant—didn’t that just require a pretty face? As for the championship of the college league in Esaham, Jade hadn’t even played; Fernanda was simply riding on the team’s success.

But what truly captured her attention was the news of Fernanda’s cancelled engagement. Discovering that Fernanda’s engagement had been annulled made Jade secretly delighted. So much so that she couldn’t help mentioning it.
Once she posed her question and watched Fernanda’s reaction, Jade expected discomfort but instead encountered a calm and composed demeanor.
“Yes, it’s been called off,” Fernanda responded serenely.
“Why? The Harpers are so affluent. Weren’t you keen to join that family? Did they… turn you down?” Jade sneered.
Fernanda had picked up on Jade’s antagonism since the day before. Her words seemed deliberately provocative.
