To Jade, Cristian’s genuine commendation came off as mocking. What skills did Fernanda possess to speak so confidently with this accomplished man?
Fernanda was enrolled at Esaham University, but Jade was sure that spot was purchased. She’d overheard classmates saying that with enough money, you could buy your way into prestigious institutions. Why else would Fernanda be majoring in something as unconventional as esports? She must have missed out on a more traditional program.
“My cousin can’t hold a candle to you!” Jade laughed. “She likes to exaggerate. But take her words with a grain of salt. If she slips up, please don’t hold it against her!”
Cristian glanced at Fernanda, who merely arched an eyebrow, clearly unbothered.
“By the way, Fernanda, can you share your backstory?” Jade continued. “Where did you end up after you got lost? Was it like in the dramas, in some remote village? I’ve heard it’s rough there—facing bullying, lacking education. It’s remarkable you made it into Esaham University. Your dad must really care about you. But getting dumped by the Harpers, that’s quite the setback.”
Jade’s voice was thick with feigned sympathy and insincere curiosity, her remarks laced with veiled insults.
Fernanda was left speechless. Jade had truly mastered the art of the backhanded compliment.
Jade’s words were clearly intended to make Cristian aware of Fernanda’s tragic past. On the surface, she appeared curious about Fernanda’s previous life, but in reality, she subtly mentioned Fernanda’s childhood disappearance, the broken engagement, and other incidents, all aimed at tarnishing her image.
How could she be so vile at such a young age?
After Jade finished speaking, she closely watched Cristian’s expression. She noticed no disdain or disgust on his face. It then dawned on her that this handsome man was already aware of Fernanda’s troubled history.
“Curious about my past?” Fernanda glanced at Jade. “Since you’re so interested, why don’t you try living it yourself? Hearing about it from others is never as impactful as experiencing it firsthand, don’t you think?”

“Now that you realize you made a mistake, just stay quiet,” Fernanda said with a light smile.
“How can you be so mean to me?” Jade felt aggrieved and turned to Cristian. “Hey, does Fernanda always act this rude with you?”
“No,” Cristian responded without hesitation. “Considering the offensive things you said earlier, she’s been quite polite. Don’t you think?”
Cristian believed the only reason Fernanda showed such restraint was out of respect for their kinship. Earlier, Jade had feigned being upset, but now she truly felt hurt.
