Chapter 890
Chapter 890:
This shattered Jade’s sense of superiority. She had expected to feel superior to Fernanda, considering herself the more refined one. Instead, she felt inferior.
Combined with her long-standing resentment towards Gracie, Jade’s dislike for Fernanda had reached a critical point.
Fernanda couldn’t understand people like Jade, who reacted with hostility toward those who were better than her. Wasn’t she tired of this?
At lunch, Toby pulled Fernanda aside for a private chat. Felipa and Sarai were also there, joined by their husbands and several cousins. The atmosphere felt more like an interrogation than a family gathering.
“Fernanda, did you end things with the Harpers because of your current boyfriend?” Toby asked directly.
“Not entirely,” Fernanda replied honestly.
Jade quickly intervened, “See, Uncle Toby? I told you! It’s because of that man!”
“So what if it is?” Fernanda countered, glaring at Jade. “Do you have a problem with that?”
“I just think you’re being foolish! You passed up a golden opportunity. Sure, your boyfriend is attractive and well-off, but is he anywhere near as wealthy as the Harper family? What were you thinking?”
Then Felipa chimed in, “Fernanda, your mother arranged that engagement because she wanted the best for you.”
Sarai added her opinion, “Why discard an opportunity like that? Marrying into the Harper family would have put you way ahead of everyone else. Your decision was reckless.”
Fernanda turned to Toby. “Uncle Toby, do you share these views?”
Toby was the one member of the Cooper family that Fernanda truly respected. Since their first encounter at the Morgans’ house, she recognized him as a man of reason.

Toby hesitated before speaking. “Fernanda, as your uncle, I believed marrying into the Harper family would have been a safe choice. But marriage isn’t solely about financial gain or social status. If that young man truly brings you happiness, then I support your decision.”
“Uncle Toby!” Jade exclaimed, clearly outraged. “How can you support this? Shouldn’t you be advising her against such reckless behavior? This is selfish! How can you condone it?”
“What do you expect him to say?” Fernanda snapped, growing impatient. “The engagement is over. It’s done. What’s the point in revisiting it?”
Jade hadn’t considered the consequences of her words. She just wanted to see Fernanda embarrassed, to have her moment of superiority. She wanted to witness Fernanda’s pride crushed completely.
“I returned with Uncle Toby to visit Grandma and fulfill her last wishes,” Fernanda stated firmly. “That’s my only agenda. I don’t owe anyone explanations for my decisions. I know we’ve never been close. Due to issues with my mother, some of you might hold grudges, and that’s okay. Honestly, I don’t care whether we are close or not. But don’t presume to lecture me just because you’re older. You don’t have that right. I’ve never troubled any of you, so don’t interfere with my personal issues—especially not here at Grandma’s memorial. Is there no sense of decorum? And Jade, if you keep provoking me, I swear you will regret it.”
