Chapter 907:

The light was on in the dorm room, and Wendy was there.

“When did you get back?” Fernanda asked as she opened the door.

Wendy was typing a report on her computer and, without looking up, replied, “I got back the day before yesterday. I heard you took a few days off.”

“Yeah, my grandmother passed away.”

Wendy wasn’t surprised. Bobby, who always shared everything with her, had already told her about his trip to Silendale.

“Did your relatives urge you to come back?” Wendy adjusted her glasses, a hint of curiosity in her voice. “Didn’t you mention that you’ve never been in touch with them?”

“No, but they said my grandmother missed me and wanted to see me before she passed. I couldn’t say no,” Fernanda explained while changing her clothes. “We’re related by blood. Even though they haven’t cared for me in the past twenty years, the family bond still exists.”

Wendy didn’t respond immediately; she just stared at the computer screen, deep in thought.

Fernanda took her things and headed to the bathroom. After her shower, she noticed Wendy still sitting motionless in the same spot, appearing dazed.

Wendy walked over and gently nudged her. Wendy seemed to snap out of her daze. “What’s wrong?”

“I should be asking you that,” Fernanda responded. “Is something bothering you?”

“Oh, just some school stuff,” Wendy answered nonchalantly.

Suddenly, her phone on the table vibrated. Without a word, she declined the incoming call. Seconds later, the phone vibrated again. She declined the call again, muted her phone, and placed it face down on the table before resuming editing her article. But she couldn’t focus; her thoughts were scattered.

She remembered the messages her mother had sent her recently.

“Please, just lend a hand. I’m begging you.”

“Please get your classmates to make some contributions, okay?”

“I have no other choice, Wendy. There are so many students at your school with extensive connections. It’s a small favor, really.”

A few days ago, her mother called her. It was the first contact in a long time. She mentioned that her husband needed surgery for a health issue, which would cost over six hundred thousand, and asked Wendy to assist with public fundraising.

Wendy was initially happy to hear from her mother but was surprised that the request was for help. She didn’t respond and ended the call. Her mother had continued to bother her about it over the past few days.

Frustrated, Wendy closed her laptop, too distracted to write any further. She turned off the lamp, crawled into bed, and tossed and turned restlessly.

After a while, Fernanda asked, “Wendy, is something bothering you?”
