Chapter 908
Chapter 908:
Wendy tensed up. “Did I wake you?”
“No, I noticed you were restless.”
Wendy pressed her lips together. In the dark room, her expression was unclear, but Fernanda could feel her inner turmoil from her strained breathing. After a moment, Wendy explained, “My mom contacted me, asking for help with public fundraising to treat her husband’s illness, but I don’t want to do it.”
Fernanda remained silent.
She recalled Wendy sharing painful details about her family history: the divorce of her parents, her mother’s swift remarriage, and the strict estrangement that followed, with explicit instructions from her mother never to contact her again.
It was clear that her mother had decided to completely cut ties with Wendy. Yet now, in need, she had reached out to Wendy. The irony stung. Despite everything, Wendy’s lingering feelings for her mother were evident in her deep emotional conflict.
That explained Wendy’s earlier reaction when she mentioned Fernanda’s relatives.
“If you don’t want to help, just block her number and delete her contact info so she can’t reach you,” Fernanda suggested.
“But wouldn’t that be too harsh?” Wendy replied.
“See? You think it’s harsh, which means you still care,” Fernanda noted. “You can’t just cut off your mom. She’ll keep trying to contact you. It’s better to deal with this now rather than later.”
“I don’t want to,” Wendy said, more decisively this time. Even if she helped now, her mother would just revert to ignoring her until the next emergency. It was always taking, never giving.
Wendy felt conflicted. She wanted to help but also didn’t want to make it too easy.
“Then set some conditions,” Fernanda advised. “But what could they offer you? It will still be about your mom in the end. However, this could be your chance to set things straight. By helping her now, she should finally recognize you as her daughter consistently and fulfill her duties as a mother.”
“You can’t make someone care. Besides, she has other kids now. She won’t put me first,” Wendy responded.

Fernanda chuckled. “So why are you hesitating? You understand everything perfectly; it’s just the emotional hurdle you can’t get over. The Wendy I know always makes up her mind quickly. When did you start doubting yourself?”
Fernanda, who lost her mother young and whose father was distant, couldn’t fully understand Wendy’s internal struggle. Her advice, though well-intentioned, came from an outsider’s perspective.
Wendy sighed deeply. “I’ll help her,” she finally said, her voice weak. “I’ll transfer the money tomorrow.” Fernanda’s words had hit home. Wendy was torn, unable to sever her emotional ties or ignore her mother’s requests.
