Chapter 909
Chapter 909:
Even though her mother had been cold to her, Wendy couldn’t bring herself to reciprocate that indifference. Yet, she didn’t expect her mother to appear at her school.
The next morning, after her primary class, Wendy headed to the teacher’s office. There, she found her mother, tearfully recounting her struggles and accusing Wendy of being unsympathetic.
The office was crowded with school leaders, including Wendy’s advisors. The tension in the room escalated with her mother’s tears.
“Wendy, how can you treat your mother like this?” a school leader reprimanded upon noticing her. “Ignoring her calls is incredibly heartless.”
“Your mother was freezing at the school gates for over two hours! You are so cruel,” another chimed in.
The reproaches and disappointed looks from her superiors felt like a heavy burden, making it difficult for her to breathe. The warmth in the room seemed to vanish. A chill spread through Wendy, making her limbs numb.
Watching her mother’s back, Wendy’s heart sank further. Her mother remained unchanged. She acted without considering the consequences, indifferent to her reputation or the impact of her actions. She was perpetually selfish, and Wendy, born from a loveless marriage, was merely a means to an end.
Wendy knew her mother’s thoughts well. If she refused to help, her mother would create a spectacle at school to coerce assistance. She was exploiting Wendy and the school’s connections for her own benefit. Wendy couldn’t help but laugh at the sheer absurdity of the situation.
Wendy’s laughter puzzled the school administrators and teachers; it was out of place and unsettling. One of the teachers, visibly more agitated, confronted her. “Wendy, what’s with the attitude? If your family is in trouble, you can tell us. We’re here to help. But the way you’re treating your mother, it’s not just rude—it’s a moral issue.”
“Since you all claim to be paragons of virtue, why don’t you handle it?” Wendy retorted coolly, then turned and walked away. She opened the door and stepped out. The soft click of the door echoed in the stunned silence of those left behind, who exchanged bewildered looks. The school was accustomed to rebellious students, yet Wendy’s level of defiance was unprecedented.
Her mother, Diana Olsen, overwhelmed by emotion, burst into tears once more and apologized to the administrators. “I’m so sorry. I’ve clearly not done enough as a mother, and I take full responsibility for this. I know Wendy is busy, but with her father’s health like this, I had no other option but to lean on her.”

The principal was quick to offer reassurance. “Don’t worry. We’re organizing a fundraiser. Right now, the focus is on getting the medical help needed. As for Wendy, we’ll try to guide her back on track.”
“Please, don’t punish her,” Diana implored. “She may be stubborn, but she’s got a good heart. She’s ambitious, and I believe she’ll make a difference in the world someday.”
“Don’t worry,” replied the administrator. “Our focus is on education, not punishment. You have our assurance.”
