Chapter 623
Chapter 623:
The only breakthrough Alisha could think of was the look in Zane’s eyes when he saw her.
She couldn’t forget that brief look of panic in Zane’s eyes earlier. It was in stark contrast to the surprise and joy when he saw her in the past.
Judging from his reaction, she couldn’t help but think of the possibility that there had to be something at the crime scene that concerned him.
With this thought in mind, Alisha returned to the Carter family manor.
Abrial was still waiting in the reception room. When she saw Alisha return, she hurriedly approached her.
“Alisha, how’s Ashton doing?” she asked anxiously.
Alisha walked into the room and briefly explained the situation with a solemn expression. Then, she asked, “While I was gone, no one came here, right?”
Abrial came back to her senses. She nodded and said in a low voice, “While you were away, I searched through this place again but found nothing.”
Alisha thought for a moment and said, “Think about it carefully. Did Zane do anything unusual before he arrested Ashton? There must be a reason he came back.”
“Anything unusual?”
Abrial closed her eyes, trying to recall everything that happened at that time. Then, she suddenly opened her eyes, which lit up. “At that time, Zane was searching the corner bookshelf by himself. When he saw me bringing Ashton in, he seemed to tell the other officers that he had already finished searching there.”
“The corner bookshelf?”
Alisha looked at the bookshelf in the corner of the room, which was filled with magazines and books. At a glance, there was nothing unusual about it.

However, Alisha still called Abrial over. Together, they moved quickly yet carefully, pulling each book off the shelf and flipping through its pages.
Finally, Alisha found a blood-stained card in one of the books.
Her heart skipped a beat as she held the blood-stained card in her hand. She and Abrial immediately thought of the same person—the assassin Red Jack.
“Why is there a card like this here? And if Zane knew about its existence, why didn’t he mention it?” Abrial asked quietly, confused.
Alisha’s face darkened at once. “Zane probably found this evidence at that time but chose to deliberately hide it. There are only two possibilities. First, he wants to frame Ashton, or second, he and Red Jack have something to do with each other.”
Although Alisha had obtained such a crucial lead, she was not relieved. Instead, she felt somewhat troubled. No matter which of her theories was true, it was difficult for her to accept. Thus, she decided to confront Zane directly. But if she went to him now, he would likely not tell the truth.
So, Alisha decided to stay in this room to wait for Zane to return. To avoid attracting attention, Alisha also instructed Abrial to leave. In this way, the other members of the Carter family wouldn’t think she was hiding in the room, and no one would discover her presence.
