Chapter 624
Chapter 624:
That night, as the sky gradually darkened, a figure quietly climbed through the window of the reception room and began rummaging through the bookshelf.
Suddenly, the lights were turned on, illuminating the entire room. Zane was so startled that he abruptly turned around, only to see Alisha with a complicated expression.
“Zane, what are you doing here so late at night?” Alisha asked in a low voice.
Zane came back to his senses and hurriedly explained, “I suddenly remembered I left something here. I urgently need it, so I came to get it.”
Alisha’s expression darkened. She took out the blood-stained card and asked, “Is this what you’re looking for?”
Zane froze, his eyes glued to the card in Alisha’s hand. Then, a menacing expression immediately appeared on his face. He said sternly, “Give it to me.”
Despite her reluctance, Zane’s behavior compelled Alisha to accept the unsettling truth of her suspicions.
It was hard for her to grasp that Zane, always so generous and kind, could be capable of such deception.
A look of betrayal crossed Alisha’s face as she asked him, “This card belongs to Red Jack from the Dark Night Organization, doesn’t it? Why hide this crucial evidence, Zane? Are you linked to Red Jack somehow?”
Zane’s reaction to hearing Red Jack’s name was one of shock. He froze, his expression cycling through confusion and dismay, clearly wrestling with his thoughts.
Noticing his internal conflict, Alisha continued, “Zane, you’re the only one I’ve brought this up with. Please, be honest with me. I don’t want to watch you destroy yourself.”
Zane collapsed to his knees, overwhelmed, as tears began to cascade down his cheeks.

Through his sobs, he managed to say, “It’s not my intention to set up Ashton. I’ve been coerced. The Dark Night Organization has my family. They’ve threatened to kill them unless I cooperate to remove Ashton as a threat. I had no other option.”
As he wept and begged for forgiveness, Alisha, witnessing his breakdown for the first time, felt her resolve waver.
Alisha let out a sigh and expressed her disappointment, saying, “Zane, keeping this a secret was a mistake. We’re both police officers, and together we could have found a way to protect your family. Now, if this gets out, it could end your career.”
Zane, drying his tears, confessed, “I never intended for things to turn out this way. The regret is overwhelming, but I’m already in too deep. What options do I have left?”
Shaking her head, Alisha responded softly, “There’s always another path. If you’re ready to own up to your actions and work to clear Ashton’s name, I’ll stand by you and help everyone understand the tough spot you were in. You’re still respected by me.”
Zane’s tears fell anew, and he began to hit his head against the floor in despair. “I’m so sorry, Alisha. I’ve let you down. I’m not the exemplary officer you believed me to be.”
