But before they could act, Braden and Sarai burst into mocking laughter.

“Bravo, Abrial,” Braden taunted. “You’ve been waiting for this day, haven’t you? Once the old man passes, the Carter family’s entire fortune will fall into your lap. Isn’t that exactly what you wanted?”

Abrial looked at him in bewilderment. “What on earth are you talking about, Uncle Braden? I’m only trying to save Grandpa!”

Sarai sneered at her, adding, “Save him? Isn’t it because of you, the family jinx, that he’s in this condition? Losing your parents wasn’t enough. Now you’ve cursed my son and worsened Levi’s health. Admit it—you’re here to ruin the Carter family.”

Ashton’s brow furrowed in anger as he spoke up. “What are you implying? Abrial’s father died in an accident, and her mother succumbed to illness. How is any of that her fault? Your son brought trouble on himself by messing with the wrong people, and Levi’s relapse is due to your constant arguing. How dare you put this on Abrial? Is it just because she’s a girl without her parents to defend her?”

His words did little to sway Braden and Sarai, who showed no sign of remorse.

Instead, they sparked more hostility as other family members, who had been about to help Levi, turned their accusations toward Abrial and Ashton.

“Still arguing, Ashton? Our family was just fine until you came along. Now we’re plagued by one problem after another. Don’t you see that you’re the issue here?”

“Exactly!” another relative chimed in. “I’ve been holding this in for a while. We already had one jinx in the family, and now we’ve got another. With everything that’s happened, our family is on the brink of ruin. If this keeps up, we’re doomed!”

“Get out of the Carter family!” one shouted angrily. “As long as you’re here, peace will be impossible.”

Abrial’s face flushed, a mixture of anger and confusion overwhelming her. She struggled to comprehend how her own relatives could harbor such thoughts.

In reality, aside from Braden and Sarai, the rest of the Carter family knew full well that Abrial had no part in Levi’s sudden illness.

With Levi’s retirement approaching, Abrial was a likely candidate to lead the Carter family.
